A great story with Heinlein at the top of his game. Even though I own the paperbacks I've started to download the Kindle versions because the more recently released ones contains a Forward or Afterward on Heinlein writing the book or a commentary about the book overall. I find them to be worth the Kindle download and a great time-passer if I get stuck somewhere.

Double Star was written when Virginia and Robert had moved to Colorado and Virginia had gotten the community theater bug. Without spoiling the rest of the story, Robert got interested as well as this was the push for this tight (only 100 pages or so), well written book when he was in his writing prime. His first Hugo winner. Many may have differing opinions about his other books but this one is universally loved and enjoyed. If you haven't read it in a while, read it again, it's worth it!

Double Star Robert A Heinlein 9780345330130 Books Reviews

This is the Master writing one of his best-ever works. Not a word is wasted. In his later volumes, Heinlein has let his philosophy slow down the story. Not here. Lots of issues are raised but they enhance the story of an actor called upon to impersonate a politician who has been kidnapped. I am deliberately not going into more detail. Read the book and watch the story unfold to its majestic conclusion.

The book could be used in an advanced college course to show the construction of a novel and yet it is very entertaining.

Heinlein needs to be separated in, at least, his novels by the 1950-64 period and post 1965. In the former he was edited which improved his writings. Thereafter he became so dominating that he was above the editor and his work, while still very, very good, could have been improved.

There are also the "so-called" Heinlein juveniles culminating in "Starship Trooper" where he stretched the definition of what could be in a "juvenile" book. All are very readable and enjoyable. And there are collections of his short fiction much of which has been collected in his "future history " collections. Again highly recommended.
It's an interesting and engrossing read through and through. I'm not a big Heinlein fan but everything that I have read has been at least good or better - and this is no exception.
Presents an interesting world and characters feel real even though there's only a habdful few of them in the whole story. The conflicts are well laid out and allow one to invest in the story. Other than that I'd simply recommend this if you like classic sci find and a good story well written. I feel like saying more about the actual plot or characters is not needed for this kind of a novel.
Heinlein was one of the great ones. Although I've read most of his works, I hadn't read this one until now. It's amazing how dated and yet how current it seems. While the language and some of the attitudes are a bit off for the 21st century reader, the story telling ability is on target.

The Great Lorenzo, an actor of moderate success is given the role of a lifetime - to impersonate and take on the persona of a kidnapped political leader. It's just a temporary job he's told....
A great writer, Heinlein tells of an actor called into service to be the double of a interplanetary politician whose kidnapping is to be kept secret. The novel depicts the actor's transition from a shallow youth to a thoughtful patriot. The science fiction was not really plausible, with future scientists using slide rules and Martians that resemble mobile, sentient trees, but the heart of the book is the protagonist, interestingly and sympathetically portrayed. I preferred, for example, THE MOON IS A HARSH MISTRESS, but Heinlein's works received numerous awards, this one being no exception.

Worth reading, and a bargain.
Robert A Heinlein's Double Star is a Hugo award winning classic science fiction from the 1950's. In this future, Mars is inhabited by an intelligent, but distinctly non-humanoid race. With travel between Mars and Earth possible, trade has begun. One political party wants to capitalize on closer relations and plans to use the acceptance of a prominent political figure by the Martians as an opportunity to change the balance of power, but their leader is kidnapped to prevent the event. Enter Lorenzo, an accomplished actor, but not quite a megastar. He agrees to act the part, but as events unfold he must continue reprising his role in ever more delicate situations as he gradually becomes accustomed to this new identity. Both his instincts and acting skills carry the day.

Heinlein spends little time on the Martian aliens except for their strange appearance and bizarre customs. Hypnosis along with extensive video assist in pulling off the deception. There is also a monarchy ruling over all of Earth with a political system similar to the United Kingdom. Heinlein also posits a sophisticated political apparatus that operates under the radar screen as well as a prominent fourth estate that is easily manipulated. While much of the sci-fi of this era was focused on space travel and aliens, Heinlein managed to create a story with political and societal relevance that remains timeless.
A great story with Heinlein at the top of his game. Even though I own the paperbacks I've started to download the versions because the more recently released ones contains a Forward or Afterward on Heinlein writing the book or a commentary about the book overall. I find them to be worth the download and a great time-passer if I get stuck somewhere.
